OUI, the Offline Usenet Interface In 1999, OUISoft (our parent company) was created to market a powerful little News Reader called OUI, the Offline Usenet Interface. We brought out two new versions of the product, and stopped development in mid 2000. OUI continued to sell well, into late 2003. New Version ! BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH SCREEN SAVER Blue Screen Screen Saver is no ordinary screen saver for Windows. You install it like any other screen saver, but when it kicks in it displays a simulated BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). After the Crash screen comes up, the computer displays a reboot screen amazingly like the real boot screen. We've been hosting the file for free download since 2000, but guess what? There is a new version out, with XP screen simulation . . . and guess what else . . . IT'S NOW OWNED BY MICROSOFT! Their End User License Agreement prohibits us from distributing the new version, but clicking on the link above will launch a new window and take you to the MS download page.

Why settle for a screen saver that just rotates still images when the AVI Screen Saver can protect your monitor with moving pictures? This free utility lets you put together saveable playlists of your favorite .avi, QuickTime, or MPEG files. It also can cycle .wav, .mp3, and MIDI sound files. (ActiveMovie or QuickTime is required for some formats.) Media can be played back in order or at random, each in a different position on screen. In addition, titles can be shown in your choice of font, movies may be letterboxed, and you can select from several display sizes. Digital Camera Enhance is a free tool that helps you clean up your photos, whether you have a digital camera or not. With a push of a button, it automatically reduces noise, performs skin smoothing, and adjusts color balance. We thought it did an especially nice job on our problem test images, although we wish the program had minimize and maximize controls on its title bar. The program works best with pictures that were taken under poor lighting conditions. If an image is already fine, you won't see much of a difference. Sliders for Auto Balance, Midtones, Color, Enhancement Details, and De- noising let you make precise adjustments, with the difference clearly shown in the "Original" and "Result" panes. Digital Camera Enhance opens images in the .bmp, .jpg, .pcx, .png, .tga, .tif, .wmf, and .pax formats. Digital Camera Enhance is freeware, with no nag screens.
Here's a nifty free clock utility for your Windows taskbar. Install this baby and it fits seamlessly into the taskbar (in the lower right hand corner of your desktop) and serves up a useful display, showing the seconds, as well as the hour and minute. There's an optional date display, as well. Note: (For Windows 95/98/NT)
Here's a free collection of professionally recorded female-voiced .wav files, perfect for event association. Each of the dozen sounds was sampled at 22K in 16-bit mono using a good-quality microphone with virtually no background noise. The announcer sounds like she's in her 20s, with a slight huskiness in her voice. Recorded phrases include "A connection has been established," "Connecting," "On Line," "I'm connected," "Ready," "Error," "Starting," "The process has been terminated," "Hi," "Goodbye," "I have something that requires your attention," and "I'm printing that now." Here's another free collection (for non-commercial use) collection of female voiced events wave files for your use. There are 27 WAVs in this first archive. All are female voiced with the names of standard Windows 3.1 and 95 buttons (applies to later versions of Windows as well).. You might need a third-party sound hooking utility to attach these sounds to the buttons so that when the button is pushed, the sound is played. (I use Aristosoft's Wired For Sound Pro, but there are other commercial and shareware utilities that can do this like KABOOM! and Icon Hear-It.) Many of these sounds could be hooked to Windows dialog boxes as well. All WAVs are original creations. Each was originally recorded in a professional braodcast studio and then sampled in 16-bit mono at 22k using the excellent commercial WAV editor Sound Forge 4.0 from Sonic Foundry. Levels were normalized to give consistent playback volume, and each sound was expertly edited.
Male Wave Files designed for OUI We liked the female voiced files above, so we thought, why hadn't the original developer of OUI come up with better sound files to go with the program? We hired a "radio guy" and came up with our own.
